Committed to Notre Dame 1/15/2015
4-STAR One of the top tight ends in the country, v, Jones was a long time commit to UCLA. However, rumors have swirled form most of the fall that Notre Dame was making in-roads. Jones took an official visit to South Bend on 12/12/2014 and on 1/15/2015 flipped to the Irish. This is a blow to UCLA’s recruiting. You never want to lose a 4-star recruit that has been committed to you for almost a year. Especially three weeks before signing day. While a blow, we do not think it is the end of the world since there have been very mixed reports about Jones during his senior season. While he has the height, size, and speed you want, there may be some intangibles that impend the overall package. The good news is that there are a few quality tight ends that UCLA is still in on, and they may be even more interested in the Bruins now that Jones is no longer a factor.

Open, de-committed from Michigan
4-STAR Until recently, Clark was committed to Michigan. With the head coaching change, Clark reopened his recruitment and has been contacted by numerous schools around the country, including UCLA. With signing day only a couple months away, UCLA is getting in on the tail end of his recruitment but is doing very well. The wildcard is the new hiring of Jim Harbaugh as the new Michigan coach and Clark officially visited them on January 16, 2015. Played in the Under Armour All-American High School Football Game January 2, 2015. Clark had his official visit to Westwood on the weekend of January 23. We are hearing it went eceptional for Clark and we are feeling very good about this recruit right now. Also, we are hearing UCLA is ramping up their recruitment of Clark’s friend, 2016 quarterback Dwayne Haskins Jr. We don’t think that is a coincidence.

On 1/29/2015 Clark tweeted this handwritten letter. It looks like something that Michigan coach Harbaugh may have written while on his home visit to Clark yesterday. Some interesting comments showing us some insight into Harbaugh’s strategy such as Clark will be able to wear number 8 (Troy Aikman’s retired number), and that Michigan averages 30,000+ more fans per game than UCLA. The “8” is mentioned three times, which we find a little surprising. We know high school players often become attached to a number and would like to keep it in college, but we are hard pressed to remember a player who committed to a school solely because of that. If that is Harbaugh’s biggest selling point to hang his hat on, we have to feel good about our chances. What do you think?

Also to note is that both Noel and Taylor Mazzone will be visiting Clark tomorrow. I imagine they will write their own list after seeing this one!!!

Committed to Wisconsin
4-STAR This is a recruit we have been watching for a while now. Penniston has been committed to Wisconsin for several months now and while committing very early in the process, Penniston has only taken one official visit, and that was to Wisconsin.  This is a local recruit we can see changing his mind, and now that Oregon State has hired Wisconsin’s head coach, even more so. Penniston’s main recruiter for Wisconsin was Chad Kauha’aha’a and he just accepted a position with Oregon State. As for UCLA, they have been maintaining some contact.  Should Clark fall through, and Penniston de-commit, we can see UCLA making a late run for him.  However, should USC also offer him, they would likely become the immediate favorite. Played in the Under Armour All-American High School Football Game January 2, 2015.

Note: We are not saying Penniston is a high valued recruit for UCLA, only that if their top priorities fall through, the stars may align for him and UCLA.

3-STAR Won the RB MVP award at the NorCal Rivals Camp Series. In his 2013 junior season, Bolu had 2,344 yards and 24 touchdowns, was the Tri-River League Offensive Player of the Year, made the Fresno Bee All-Area Team and made the MaxPreps Division I all-state team. Has officially visited UCLA.

3-STAR Simmons missed most of his senior season with a leg injury so there is nothing to report regarding his development or readiness for the fall. Regardless, we always liked Simmons, and his speed and skill will provide a new dimension for the UCLA offense. Has officially visited UCLA. MAJOR UPDATE 1/22/2015 Simmons has de-committed. Simmons was one of our favorite recruits and we believed he would have had an impact early on in the program.

4-STAR Jamabo is a guy who just kept climbing the recruiting rankings all season. Big, strong, and a workhorse, Jamabo is a young man that combined with Josh Rosen would put the UCLA offense in a great situation for the next few years. Jamabo has expressed varying degrees of interest in a number of schools. The one constant in his recruitment seems to be UCLA. Notre Dame has emerged as a contender since putting their top recruiter, Tony Alford, on him. In spite of that, we like our chances here. Has officially visited UCLA. The wildcard could be Texas – we are hearing that since their 4-star running back Jordan Stevenson de-committed, they are again recruiting Jamabo hard. Played in the Under Armour All-American High School Football Game January 2, 2015. As a senior, Jamabo rushed 235 times for 2,279 yards and 44 touchdowns. He also made the first team on MaxPreps 2014 All-American Football Team.

4-STAR Scarlett is a guy UCLA would like to have and Scarlett reportedly loves UCLA. However, with Jamabo still out there, Scarlett and UCLA may both be waiting until Jamabo decides. We suspect UCLA would be happy to take both, but a commitment from Scarlett might start looking like an overcrowded backfield for Jamabo. And vice versa. Scarlett is expected to announce Monday, December 15, 2014 which indicates to us, it is not likely to be UCLA, and probably Stanford. Final schools: UCLA, Stanford, Washington, and Notre Dame. Has officially visited UCLA. UPDATE: 12/15/2014 – as we believed, Scarlett has committed to Stanford.

Committed to Texas A&M
December 17, 2014
5-STAR Update: Kirk committed to Texas A&M December 17 over ASU and UCLA. This was a surprise to no one except the pay sites who all mimicked each other by claiming Kirk was a lock to ASU. (Side note: do all these pay sites just post what all the other sites post? We have visions of these guys spending all their time on other sites looking for information to copy). We suspect Kirk will stick to his Texas A&M commitment, however, there are coaching changes going on in College Station. That always gives other schools an opportunity. Should Sumlin leave, all bets are off. UCLA is thought to be his first offer. Kirk visited UCLA the same weekend as Josh Rosen. We would have to think UCLA is appealing to any receiver as their back-up plan. Played in the Under Armour All-American High School Football Game January 2, 2015.

4-STAR Broadus provides another interesting recruitment. A player that has always seemed to really like UCLA, and is good friends with UCLA recruit Josh Rosen, he once had an opportunity to commit and lock in his scholarship. Since then, there have been a few changes. His senior year was a little lackluster and didn’t show the improvement over his junior year as expected. At the same time, other receivers started emerging in their senior year and the UCLA coaches noticed them. Then there is the father of Broadus, Snoop Dogg/Lion. Snoop gave a television interview during the season stating that he hopes Cordell attends USC, since they are a “USC family.” That probably did not help UCLA’s recruitment of Broadus. If the father and family of a recruit are resistant to letting their son attend UCLA, then how much time and effort do the Bruin coaches really want to put into recruiting the player?

As for our opinion, we hope UCLA continues recruiting Broadus. Regardless of the “fit” or the family, this is the kind of recruit that brings recognition to the program. In other words, you have to think “big picture” with this recruit. It helps in recruiting, in raising money, and in name recognition. UCLA is in Tinseltown, and the way to market that is to have a few good players who also happen to have celebrity relatives. There is little downside, but potentially a lot of upside. When Asiantii Woulard took his official visit, he got to go bowling with the father of UCLA player Justin Combs. That would be Sean “Diddy” Combs. You think that influenced his decision? We do. Broadus was selected to play in the Under Armour All-American High School Football Game January 2, 2015.

It appears that UCLA is again recruiting Broadus as we get close to signing day.

4-STAR McNeal is a multi-dimensional athlete that can end up playing a number of positions in college. If he were to come to UCLA, they would plug him into wherever the need is. He committed to Texas 12/19/2014, and was looking primarily at Texas schools so it would have been hard to pull him out of the Lone Star State. Most of the pay sites thought Texas A&M was the team to beat. McNeal visited UCLA 12/12-12-14 with teammate and good friend, superstar linebacker and UCLA recruit, Malik Jefferson.

3-STAR Brown is still showing interest in schools around the vcountry, even though he committed to Texas Tech in December. He interests outside of Texas tech seem to be mostly UCLA and Colorado. The Colorado connection is Brown’s head coach, Mike Moschetti, a former star quarterback for Rick Neuheisel at Colorado. Brown visited UCLA January 16, 2015 and we suspect that as it gets closer to signing day, UCLA is going to look like a much better option than Texas Tech.

4-STAR Small, but fast and powerful describes Newsome. In his senior season, Newsome had 1,073 receiving yards, 12 receiving touchdowns, 470 rushing yards, 7 rushing touchdowns, as well as returning punts and kicks. Led his team to the Texas Class 5A Division 1 State Championship. With over 30 offers Newsome was named the Star Telegram 2014 Super Team Offensive Player of the Year. As a junior, Newsome had 7 touchdowns on punt returns and placed second in the state finals for the 100 meter dash.

5-STAR Probably the top high school quarterback in the entire country, Rosen has already enrolled at UCLA so that he can participate in Spring Practice. Was selected (but declined) to play in the Under Armour All-American High School Football Game January 2, 2015. Has officially visited UCLA. In his senior season, Rosen completed 64% of his passes, passed for 3,186 yards and 29 touchdowns. Rosen passed for 90 touchdowns during his high school career. He also made just about every major All-Star team imaginable as well as being named the Los Angeles Times Player of the Year.
Others Having the top quarterback in the country is a great luxury for the coaching staff to have this recruiting season. It takes a lot of pressure off. However, it wouldn’t hurt to take a second gunslinger in this class. Someone with potential, willing to redshirt, and understands they will need a year or two to develop. A QB who might fit that scenario has recently opened up his recruitment, Kyle Kearns, a 4-star from Pleasanton, California who recently de-commited from SMU. (NOTE: Kearns committed to Wake Forest January 24, 2015). We were also hoping UCLA would get involved with Sheriron Jones, a 4-star from Moreno Valley who recently de-commited from Florida. Interestingly, Jones attends the same high school as UCLA offensive lineman commit, Tevita Halalilo. However, Jones just committed to Tennessee. Also, despite what others are saying, we don’t think that UCLA is out of the running for 2016 QB star and Florida State commit, Malik Henry. Florida State may sign as many as three 4-star quarterbacks in the class immediately in front of him. That is a lot of young quarterback competition. Also, on January 23, 2015, Henry announced he will be transferring to IMG Academy in Florida for his senior season. This is an interesting development since it will give him a good idea if he wants to spend several more years in Tallahassee. He may be ready to come home after a year. We shall see. With Henry’s decisions, and a declining interest in 2016 quarterback K.J. Costello, UCLA is starting to increase their recruitment of other top 2016 quarterbacks, especially Dwayne Haskins Jr. of Maryland.

In other recruiting news, UCLA has just offered a 2018 QB from Florida, Joey Gatewood.

4-STAR Wariboko has suggested on several occasions that he was ready to announce, yet he never did. The former Oklahoma commit Wariboko has taken some official visits. While UCLA has often been reported as leading for Wariboko, we are not so sure. Oklahoma is reportedly pulling out all the stops to keep the big guy home. It will be interesting to see if the home state team can keep him local. Ohio state is also in the hunt. According to a 12/10/2014 OregonLive.com report, Uluave stated that UCLA has not been in much contact with him lately. This is usually a sign that UCLA is doing well with other prospects they prefer. Uluave has yet to take an official visit to UCLA and Oregon may be the front-runner now.

4-STAR Samia, surprisingly committed to the Oklahoma Sooners back in August. This came after an unofficial visit to Norman on a beautiful August day. Before committing to Oklahoma, Samia admitted he was a UCLA lean. While we don’t know what changed, we do know for a fact that Samia is one of offensive line coach Adrian Klemm’s favorite players in this class. Our Oklahoma sources are saying that Klemm is again reaching out to Samia, and he is accepting the calls. For some reason, this just feels like one of those recruiting battles that is just not over yet.

  1. Why is Josh Rosen only 99% probable, if he’s already attending school?

  2. Nothing is guaranteed in life!
